How to Vote in November Part 2

“Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment. For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Would you have no fear of the one who is in authority? Then do what is good, and you will receive his approval, for he is God's servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain. For he is the servant of God, an avenger who carries out God's wrath on the wrongdoer. Therefore one must be in subjection, not only to avoid God's wrath but also for the sake of conscience. ” Romans 13:2-5 ESV

Governments as Servants of God?

For one thing this probably means some of us need to change our attitude toward Government. God provided for it and we mess it up. I’m pretty sure that if you or I were to take over government, it would still be a mess. In short, we have seen the government and the government is us. Its flaws are mine and yours.

Second, if you get in trouble with the law then it’s not a cranky, sleep deprived police officer who is nick-picking, it’s you. You sped and you’re a lawbreaker and that ticket is God’s wrath upon you! Hey, it’s better than wrecking the car.

NOTE: To be fair, Acts 5:29 (and other passages) tells us that there are times we should disobey the government (peacefully ala MLK or more controversially ala Dietrich Bonhoeffer) But we better be on solid ground in doing so. Some have even wondered if Christian leaders of the American revolution were right to revolt.

Third obey the law so you don't go around feeling guilty. And if you don't go around feeling guilty, then you should! Laws are made for people like you!

Vote for someone who is competent to maintain order in society so that people can flourish, living out God's calling rather than cower, living in fear of the mayhem that may engulf them.

Prayer

“Lord, help me to discern which presidential candidate will be most effective in justly maintaining order in such a way that the gifts You have given all Americans can be exercised for you. Amen”
