“if any kind of rule-keeping had power to create life in us,
we would certainly have gotten it by this time”
Galatians 3:21-22 (MSG)

Ever since great friends took my family and me to see “Les Mis” on Broadway I have felt that the musical, the movie, and the movie/musical are the best contemporary depictions of what adhering the law as a basis for one’s life accomplishes in oneself and how different that is to what living by the grace of God accomplishes in oneself.   In the end Grace wins.

If you wish to learn more about living by grace which produces freedom and how living by law puts us in bondage, I encourage you to come this Saturday evening to the CLC second floor auditorium for deserts, fellowship in a café setting, and a time of exploring how well each of us lives by grace rather than law.

“After starting your Christian lives in the Spirit, why are you now trying to become perfect
by your own human effort?
Galatians 3:3 (NLT)

This Saturday will feature a passage from Galatians on the freedom of living by grace as well as some video clips from the “Les Mis” Movies.

AND we will also be blessed with a special live rendition of one the musical’s most beautiful pieces.   It will be sung by Rachel Byrd.  Thank you Rachel!

What about your life?   Do you tend to live by the “unforced rhythms of grace”  (Matthew 11:29 MSG) or by the “bread of anxious toil” (Psalm 127 ESV)

  1. Genesis 2:9 "And the Lord God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground... In the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil."
Genesis 2:16-17 "And the Lord God commanded the man, "You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil for when you eat of it you will surely die."

A decade ago or more an elder at our church (Chris Wolfe) brought up these two trees. I knew he was on to something, but I didn't understand. I've pondered this in my heart (Luke 2:19) since then. It has gradually dawned on me that this problem of living a life of grace vs a life based on the law has been with us since the Beginning. And that God truly meant and means for us to live a life of grace, both getting it and giving it. The knowledge of good and evil is the Law. Life is Grace.
